Failure to Respond to Signs of Fetal Distress

A common reason why babies and mothers are injured is the failure to properly respond to signs of ongoing fetal distress. During the course of a mother's pregnancy, doctors and nurses perform many tests to track the health of the mother and baby. These tests look at the baby's growth, heart function and many other things while it is still in the womb.

Tragically, medical professionals may fail to properly address signs of fetal distress even when they are present. As a result, a baby may suffer from lack of oxygen (called hypoxia) or lack of blood flow (called ischemia) during the course of delivery. This can result in severe brain injury leading to Cerebral Palsy. Injury to nerves in the infant's arm may also occur during vaginal injury when the baby's shoulder becomes stuck in the birth canal. This can be the result of medical malpractice, as can fetal or maternal death.
